"So Far"
As
a staple of Melbourne’s live music scene, Paul Gadsby could
turn up in almost any situation - playing bass with the
bluegrass-inspired Uncle Bill, or backing any number of
other artists on a number of instruments.
What he does is unobtrusive and right. Gadsby is an integral
part of the rootsy, adult music scene that manages to exist
in the southern capital in slightly better shape than elsewhere.
Inside the head and heart of this lanky, taciturn bloke,
however; is a highly commercial pop music pulse that is
now finally been given vent.
The
opener Dreaming is a rollicking good-time, vaguely
Beatlesque piece, with Gadsby’s light high tenor vocal bringing
to mind Sting.
Comparisons continue in the equally catchy Dumb Pump,
I Want You Back and I Found Love; with Gadsby
studiously avoiding the obvious for some delightful melodic
twists and turns.
There
is more on this album - funky stuff such as Next Step,
the bluesy Easy to Fall and the jazzy Break
a Leg, but Paul’s pop sensibility is what distinguishes
him from the pack.
Some of Melbourne’s finest players help out and make So
Far so good.
